2021 President’s Christmas Message

Fellow R.A.N. Ski Club members

2021 has been a very challenging year for your Club and no doubt for each of you. Your Board amended Club COVID procedures for the 2021 season to more closely align with Government directions and in order to offer increased Lodge capacity and improved amenity.  Notwithstanding excellent snowfalls, the season was again deeply affected by Government travel restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  While pre-season accommodation bookings were very high, the R.A.N. Ski Club subsequently provided full refunds to members amounting to $356,602 for cancellation of bookings arising from Government COVID directions.   On behalf of all members I thank our Booking Officer Liz and Treasurer Paul for their exceptional work in facilitating this extraordinary number of refunds.

As the Club remains in a very sound financial position with a stable (and slowly increasing) membership base we are able to continue investingin the maintenance of our Lodges and planning for the redevelopment of the Thredbo Lodge accommodation wing. While delays induced by Covid restrictions have slowed progress in finalising the design and engineering package necessary to submit a Development Application for this work, we have completed an initial (favourable) consultation with Government planning officials and now working towards DA submission early in 2022.

It is pleasing to see that with the high public take-up of COVID vaccinations, the Federal, NSW and Victorian Governments have recognised the need to ‘live with’ Covid 19, and are progressively relaxing COVID travel and gathering restrictions.

Your Board has agreed to fully align operation of your lodges with NSW and Victorian COVID directions as these are promulgated in 2022 and expects that all members (who are not subject to Government travel restrictions) will be able to enjoy the NSW Lodges through 2022, irrespective of vaccination status, and that a similar result will be achieved for the Buller Lodge early in 2022. We expect therefore that unless Government travel and gathering restrictions are re-imposed, the Lodges will operate on a normal basis next year.  Accordingly, the NSW Lodge Covid Safe Plans have been rescinded, and the Buller Covid Safe Plan will be rescinded as soon as the Victorian Government direction permits. Of course, the Lodges are not suitable accommodation for those who are subject to Government Self-isolation, Quarantine or travel restrictions and refunds will be provided for booking cancellations in these circumstances.

I am pleased to advise that the initiative to open the Thredbo Lodge for most of the summer season has been strongly supported by members and welcome the increased number of Whole of Lodge Bookings at Perisher.  The Thredbo Christmas in November event organised and hosted by our VPMMC Linda and VP Thredbo Ian was an outstanding success and Linda is considering future themed events at each of our lodges through the Club management committees.

Perisher Lodge – Perisher Summer Whole of Lodge (WOL) bookings are filling fast with 19 days of WOL bookings plus four Work Party weekends already locked in.  If you are considering making a summer booking, contact Rick McMaster direct on 0419 448 722.   Directors have decided to defer implementation of the Perisher sub-committee’s proposal to replace the wood fireplace with a gas fireplace pending the results of a survey of Lodge occupants over the winter season.

Thredbo Lodge – There are a few vacancies in January although the Thredbo Blues Festival is fully booked, but plenty of beds available in February and March. There is lots to do in and around Thredbo in Summer, including mountain biking, hiking in the park, golf and fly fishing. The resort organises events as well. Why not join a hosted sunset walk to observe the rise of the full moon from the top of Australia?

2022 AGM – a reminder that our next AGM will be held on Sat 14th May, 2022.

As next year marks ten years since the Perisher Lodge rebuild, the 2022 AGM has been reassigned to be held at  Perisher Lodge to coincide with the 10-year Anniversary.
